How do I manage complicated people?

por Felipe Dib

Hello, my friend! How are you? If you're out of time or "in a rush", go to the last paragraph of this text for a fast answer.

In times of immediate responses and connection 24 hours a day, talking about long-term transformation is a risk! But… we believe you can (and must!) dream big, and make a daily effort to get better every day. This is our mission - seeing you speaking English and being a Leader wherever you go. "The 5 Essential People Skills" was written by Dale Carnegie and its goal is to improve your people skills. In other words, to improve your relationships at work and at home.

You're growing up in the organization, my friend. The higher up you move in an organization, the more diverse personalities you'll encounter. "In order to build a career that's both successful and enjoyable, you can and must learn how to build rapport with those hard ones".

The first type is the "Ultradriver", who is a peak performer, top achiever. "Realize that the ultradriver's behavior patterns are based on ego needs". Value them, talk about their achievements. As Dale Carnegie says "they'll appreciate the fact that you see the world as it really should be - with them on top".

The second type is "The Secret Agent". This guy doesn't want you to massage his ego. He wants to be sure you're not going to diminish them in any way. "Let the secret agent know that you're aiming for the top, and let him/her know that you'll depend on him/her to be an important power behind the throne".

The third type Carnegie calls "The Eager Beaver", someone who is looking up to admiration. How do you connect with them? Recognize his/her strengths, and also the weaknesses. "Rapport building with eager beavers is a matter of helping them pace themselves. They may even feel that you're jealous of their talent and energy. Unfortunately, if you let them run, burnout is inevitable, and that's bad for everyone.

The Ultradriver, the Secret Agent, the Eager Beaver and the last type, the Burnout. Be supportive with the burnout, because this person has lost enthusiasm. To manage people we must understand what matters to them. We can't serve a barbecue to a vegetarian. Understand people's point of view and connect with them by offering what they need. Comment here about the most complicated person you've met. See you next class!
