Is Persuasion a People Skill?

por Felipe Dib

Hello, my friend! How are you? If you're out of time or "in a rush", go to the last paragraph of this text for a fast answer.

In times of immediate responses and connection 24 hours a day, talking about long-term transformation is a risk! But… we believe you can (and must!) dream big, and make a daily effort to get better every day. This is our mission - seeing you speaking English and being a Leader wherever you go. "The 5 Essential People Skills" was written by Dale Carnegie and its goal is to improve your people skills. In other words, to improve your relationships at work and at home.

To get your audience on your side, you have to convince them of a need they may not be aware they had. "You need to make it obvious by demonstrating a profound need and energizing it with enthusiasm, evidence, and urgency", says the author.

Call people by their names (we've mentioned it before) when you talk to them so they naturally feel more significant because their names are remembered. Dale Carnegie presents 3 powerful factors that help you persuade others. Here they are:

Authority: people want to feel that you come from a position of legitimate power.

Emotion: evoke an emotional response with metaphors or appealing to a sense of adventure.

Reason: present facts and figures and connect people they know with this data.

Persuasion is a very specific (and needed!) people skill. Authority, emotion and reason help you listen to your ideas and, hopefully, follow them. Next class we'll dive deeper into this concept, but now I'd like to hear from you: have you ever been convinced to buy something you didn't need? Comment here and see you next class!
