How do I convince them?

por Felipe Dib

Hello, my friend! How are you? If you're out of time or "in a rush", go to the last paragraph of this text for a fast answer.

In times of immediate responses and connection 24 hours a day, talking about long-term transformation is a risk! But… we believe you can (and must!) dream big, and make a daily effort to get better every day. This is our mission - seeing you speaking English and being a Leader wherever you go. "The 5 Essential People Skills" was written by Dale Carnegie and its goal is to improve your people skills. In other words, to improve your relationships at work and at home.

Last class we talked about authority, emotion and reason when you're trying to convince someone. Today we'll see how you can do it, step by step.

1- Build trust: you must be sincere and well intentioned, my friend. Show people why you should be heard.

2- Find common ground: show your audience that your values and ideas mesh with their own. Put yourself in their shoes, understand their concerns, be sympathetic to their feelings.

3- Structure your information: be clear and leave your most powerful points for last so they stick in your audience's mind.

4- Appeal to self-interest: know your audience's need and show what they'll gain if they buy from you.

5- Appeal to authority: show experts who agree with your ideas.

6- Create consensus: most people are influenced by what others are doing. Demonstrate that you're selling something approved by a large number of people.

7- Time your request: avoid approaching people if they're stressed. Respect their moment.

8- Be original: make yourself or your ideas seem unique. The more scarce something is, the higher its price.

9- Be diplomatic: treat people as you'd like to be treated.

10- Be humble: people stop listening if you come across as arrogant.

Pay attention to people and see how you can serve them. If you're someone who is always adding value to people's lives, they'll be open to hear from you. Who's someone you trust? Why? Comment here and see you next class!
