Should I smile and speak up?

por Felipe Dib

Hello, my friend! How are you? If you're out of time or "in a rush", go to the last paragraph of this text for a fast answer.

In times of immediate responses and connection 24 hours a day, talking about long-term transformation is a risk! But… we believe you can (and must!) dream big, and make a daily effort to get better every day. This is our mission - seeing you speaking English and being a Leader wherever you go. "The 5 Essential People Skills" was written by Dale Carnegie and its goal is to improve your people skills. In other words, to improve your relationships at work and at home.

Before we start studying, smile. Smile, my friend! Are you smiling with your mouth shut? Open your mouth, take a deep breath and smile…

Good! I love to see you smiling! "The positive effect of having a smile on your face may seem obvious, but smiling is so crucial to building rapport that we need to spend a moment focused on it". I know my next words might sound weird, but you should practice your smile. Stand in front of a mirror and see how you look. Pay attention to your eyes, because they're the ones who will reveal a real smile.

There's science behind your smile, and "when the muscles of the face contract in a smile, the experience is reflected in the production of neurotransmitters in the brain". Carnegie explains that by looking and acting happy, you can literally make yourself feel happy.

Another important factor when you communicate is your intonation. Make sure people can hear you clearly when you talk. "As an assertive person, you should know how to vary your voice quality to build rapport in different situations".

Smile and speak up, but do it with joy. Practice your smile and always check your eyes to see if you're really smiling. Don't yell, but articulate your words with energy so people can hear and understand your message. How often do you smile? Comment here and see you next class!
